Thoughtful Planning and Transparency Behind Summit’s Field Improvements
During a recent discussion about Summit’s proposed field and lighting improvements, Tom Szieber shared his perspective, drawing on 20 years of experience as a high school sportswriter who has witnessed similar projects across communities.
Tom acknowledged that neighbors often have valid concerns about quality of life and property values when new athletic facilities are proposed. However, he noted that once projects are completed, residents usually find the results overwhelmingly positive—often leading to higher property values and enhanced community amenities.
Addressing recent litigation surrounding the project, Tom described it as obstructionist tactics designed to delay progress, emphasizing that some individuals have even politicized the issue by linking it to partisan outcomes.
He commended Councilman Kevin Smallwood for his commitment to transparency and community engagement, pointing out that Smallwood has sought extensive public input and shown a genuine willingness to listen. Tom reminded residents that disagreement with an outcome doesn’t mean voices weren’t heard—it means thoughtful decisions were made after careful consideration.
In closing, Tom expressed confidence that even those skeptical today will ultimately see the project’s value and the positive impact it will bring to Summit’s schools, property values, and community spirit.
Together, we can make thoughtful improvements that benefit every Summit resident—on and off the field.
