Meet the Candidates

Don Nelson
Don Nelson, a devoted lifelong resident of Summit, has an extensive background as a public servant. He graduated from Summit High School in 1979 and dedicated over 40 years to the Summit Fire Department, rising to Deputy Fire Chief before retiring in 2022. Don has also been actively involved in his community, serving on various boards including the Summit Zoning Board and the Police Athletic League. His commitment extends to youth sports, where he coaches basketball and baseball. Furthermore, Don runs a state-certified boating school and has recently ventured into politics with aspirations to join the City Council. His priorities focus on public safety, responsible development, and effective municipal management. With a track record of facilitating consensus and a deep understanding of Summit, Don is poised to significantly impact his community through dedicated council service.

Mark Gundersen
Mark Gundersen, a financial expert in private credit and small business funding, chose Summit for its close-knit neighborhoods and vibrant downtown. He, his wife Lucy, their son John, and their golden retriever Archie enjoy the community's charm.
Active in Summit, Mark serves on the Economic Development Advisory Committee, promoting local business growth. He is a Summit Downtowners’ Association member, a volunteer coach, and a regular patron of local spots.
Mark earned a B.A. in Economics from Williams College and an MBA from Harvard. His career began with microloan projects in Nicaragua, fueling his passion for business growth. Now, he co-owns a financial firm focused on small and mid-sized businesses.
A Bernards High School alum, Mark excelled in academics and sports. Running for Common Council, he aims to advocate fiscal responsibility, support local businesses, and ensure public safety and responsible development in Summit.
