In their HTTV interview, Delia Hamlet and Jamel Boyer address the controversial proposed redevelopment of the former Red Cross property on Springfield Avenue in Summit.

The discussion focuses on the importance of following the City's established zoning review process, respecting the decisions of local boards, and carefully evaluating how proposed developments could affect surrounding neighborhoods.

Delia explains that the proposal went through a formal Zoning Board review involving professional testimony, public input, and consideration of numerous requested variances. She emphasizes the importance of allowing these boards to evaluate applications based on zoning requirements and the evidence presented.

Drawing on her experience serving on Summit's Planning Board, Delia identifies two concerns she recalls from the proposal: adequate parking and safe access for emergency vehicles, particularly fire trucks.

While expressing support for the ability of religious congregations to worship, Delia emphasizes that redevelopment proposals must also account for neighborhood impacts, traffic circulation, parking availability, and public safety.

She also acknowledges that she did not closely follow every detail of the application and expresses confidence in Summit's land-use boards to make appropriate decisions.

The central message: redevelopment proposals deserve a fair, thorough review that respects religious institutions while addressing zoning requirements, neighborhood concerns, and public safety.

Delia Hamlet & Jamel Boyer: Red Cross Property Redevelopment, Parking Concerns & Public Safety

In their HTTV interview, Delia Hamlet and Jamel Boyer discuss their ongoing efforts to address two important quality-of-life issues in Summit: Salt Brook flooding and erosion, and unreliable cell phone service.

Delia shares how she recently spent an hour visiting a resident near Sunset Drive to examine continuing erosion concerns along Salt Brook. While acknowledging the progress already made, she emphasizes the need to protect neighboring properties and trees from further damage.

She also discusses proposed federal funding for flood mitigation and environmental improvements that could benefit Salt Brook, the Passaic River watershed, and surrounding communities.

Turning to another longstanding concern, Delia explains that she recently contacted Verizon's government affairs team to explore solutions to unreliable cellular coverage, particularly on Summit's North Side.

Jamel highlights how their independent efforts complement one another. Although they don't always vote alike or approach every issue the same way, he explains that they frequently discover they're working on different pieces of the same problems.

Delia Hamlet & Jamel Boyer: Working Together to Fix Salt Brook and Improve Summit’s Cell Service

In the closing moments of her HTTV interview, Delia Hamlet reflects on her previous election, which she lost by approximately 120 votes, and discusses the importance of voter participation in Summit's local elections.

Delia encourages Republicans, Democrats, and independent voters to participate in the election and consider local candidates on their own merits rather than solely through the lens of national party politics.

She acknowledges the challenges of reaching voters across party lines and explains why she believes independent voters, along with support from Democrats and Republicans, are important in a competitive local election.

Delia also discusses the importance of making a plan to vote, particularly during a busy election week, and mentions early voting and vote-by-mail options as ways residents can participate.

Her closing message focuses on looking beyond national political disagreements, evaluating candidates at the local level, and recognizing that every vote matters in a close municipal election.

Delia Hamlet: Look Beyond Party Labels and Get Out to Vote in Summit

In her HTTV interview, Delia Hamlet raises concerns about access to affordable senior housing in Summit and the challenges longtime residents face when seeking housing assistance.

Delia explains that she personally traveled to Trenton to testify against state legislation she believed was rushed and poorly written, emphasizing the importance of getting housing policies right for local communities.

She shares the story of an 80-year-old Summit veteran who was displaced from his Kent Place home following a devastating fire. Now staying at the DeBary Inn, the veteran expressed frustration about being unable to secure a place in Summit's senior housing despite his circumstances.

For Delia, his situation highlights the challenges facing local seniors who need affordable housing but encounter waiting lists, eligibility restrictions, and limited availability.

She also points to restrictions on senior housing within Summit's 345-unit fourth-round affordable housing obligation, underscoring the complexity of addressing local needs under state housing requirements.

Delia's message is clear: Summit must pay greater attention to the housing needs of its seniors, particularly longtime residents and vulnerable individuals facing unexpected hardships.

Delia Hamlet: Summit Seniors Deserve Better Access to Affordable Housing

In her HTTV interview, Delia Hamlet discusses her approach to working with Union County officials to address local concerns, improve public spaces, and deliver results for Summit residents.

When asked how she would approach the County differently, Delia emphasizes the importance of building relationships, maintaining open communication, and recognizing progress while continuing to advocate for Summit's needs.

She highlights the recent improvements at Briant Park, including the installation of new fitness stations, as an example of what persistent engagement and cooperation can accomplish.

Delia shares how she personally reached out to Union County Manager Ed Oatman to thank him for the improvements, while also recognizing the work of County officials, including Vicky Drake.

While acknowledging that Summit and Union County have not always agreed, Delia believes that being proactive, maintaining productive relationships, and giving credit where it's due are essential to getting things done.

For Delia, effective leadership means working collaboratively with County officials, advocating for Summit residents, and focusing on tangible improvements that benefit the community.

Delia Hamlet: Working with Union County to Deliver Results for Summit Residents

In her HTTV interview, Delia Hamlet shares how she hopes Summit residents will remember her: “The Fixer.”

For Delia, public service is about showing up at residents’ doors, listening to their concerns, and taking action to solve problems—regardless of whether someone can vote.

She shares a recent experience while knocking on doors in Summit, where she met residents who were concerned about how dark their street was at night. Even though they weren't eligible to vote, Delia took their concerns seriously and submitted a streetlight service request to JCP&L.

By the next day, the streetlights were working.

But Delia's story doesn't end there. She explains how sharing that experience and showing other residents how to report streetlight problems helped more people take action to improve their own neighborhoods.

For Delia, effective leadership isn't about political labels or promises. It's about listening, showing up, fixing problems, and empowering residents to make a difference in their community.

Delia Hamlet: “The Fixer” — Showing Up, Solving Problems & Getting Results for Summit Residents

In her HTTV interview, Delia Hamlet addresses the question of what separates Republicans and Democrats at the local level—and why she believes national political divisions are hurting Summit.

Delia explains that she sees little difference between Republicans and Democrats when it comes to the fundamental responsibilities of municipal government. She expresses concern about how national political conflicts have spilled into Summit's Council meetings, social media discussions, and everyday community interactions.

She also highlights the impact this divisiveness has on City employees, who come to work to serve residents but increasingly find themselves surrounded by political disagreements.

Drawing on her three years of experience on Common Council, Delia emphasizes that local government has too many important responsibilities to be distracted by partisan conflict.

For Delia, the message is clear: local government should focus on serving residents, addressing community needs, and getting the work done—not importing national political battles into City Hall.

Delia Hamlet: National Politics Has No Place in Summit’s Local Government

In her HTTV interview, Delia Hamlet identifies Summit’s senior citizens as one of the community’s most underserved groups and calls for greater attention, engagement, and support for older residents.
While acknowledging the senior housing resources already available in Summit, Delia believes the City can do more to ensure seniors feel connected, valued, and included in the community.
She recognizes the contributions of local organizations, including Oak Knoll, as well as Councilman Jamel Boyer’s efforts to engage seniors through activities such as bingo. However, Delia believes there are additional opportunities to expand programs, strengthen community involvement, and better serve residents living in senior housing.
For Delia, supporting Summit’s seniors means building on existing efforts, encouraging greater community participation, and making sure our older residents receive the attention and support they deserve.

Delia Hamlet: Summit Must Do More to Support Our Seniors

In her HTTV interview, Delia Hamlet addresses how she would respond as a Summit Common Council member if federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations took place in Summit.
Drawing on her experience as a military veteran, Delia emphasizes the importance of treating every individual with dignity and respect, regardless of their background or immigration status.
Delia expresses confidence in the Summit Police Department and its commitment to following New Jersey Attorney General guidelines regarding immigration enforcement. She explains that local police operate under established rules and emphasizes her trust in their professionalism and judgment.
For Delia, the priority is ensuring that all Summit residents feel safe, respected, and protected while allowing local law enforcement to carry out its responsibilities appropriately.
Her message is straightforward: treat everyone with respect, follow established law enforcement guidelines, and trust Summit’s police officers to serve the community professionally.
